A Salute to Our Donors

W.K. Kellogg Foundation
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation of Battle Creek, Michigan has awarded UTB/TSC a $100,000 planning grant to improve educational opportunities for Hispanics.  UTB/TSC was among 18 colleges and universities nationally to receive grants in phase one of the foundations six year, $28.7 million initiative called Engaging Latino Communities for Education. UTB/TSC  will work with colleges, school districts and other groups to five Hispanic students the support they need to succeed in school and graduate from college.

A longtime professor at UTB/TSC, Abel Hinojosa has helped many students achieve their goals of attaining an education. In memory of his younger brother, Jose Roberto, Hinojosa has established The Jose Roberto Hinojosa Scholarship for Accounting Excellence in the School of Business.

"My brother was 16 years old when he was killed in a hunting accident and I was not able to help him accomplish his goal of getting an education, said Hinojosa. "By establishing this endowment, I honor his memory and I hope to help accounting students attend UTB/TSC."

Last year, Hinojosa was awarded the prestigious Chancellor's Council Teaching Award and received a cash award of $500. Hinojosa took this award and matched it to establish the endowment. Hinojosa hopes to raise 10,000 for the endowment.

4th Annual UTB/TSC Chancellor's Cup Golf Classic

Golf, not to mention a little football, may have been the initial draw but higher education in the Lower Rio Grande Valley was the real reason friends of UTB/TSC made a success of the 4th annual UTB/TSC Chancellor's Cup Golf Classic.

The tournament, named for the UT System Chancellor Dr. William Cunningham, was held in March at the South Padre Island Golf Club.  The tournament also served as an opportunity to bid farewell to Cunningham as he steps down as Chancellor next month. More than $20,000.00 was raised for the annual fund.

Dr. Jere Light

Retired professor, Dr. Jere Light , donated a collection of historical videos, valued at $4,000, to the UTB/TSC Media Services to have archived in their library for students to watch.
