Lovett Named Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Award Winner

You might say UTB/TSC Associate Professor Marvin Lovett goes the extra mile for his students, and that's why this business-marketing specialist was chosen to receive the Chancellor's Council Outstanding Teaching Award.

"I never expected to receive this award at this time in my career," Lovett said of the prestigious honor he received during Spring Commencement ceremonies.

"I know there are tons of equally dedicated professors here on campus deserving of this recognition, and I hope they receive it."

The Chancellor's Council award is presented annually to professors from each of the University of Texas System schools.

Lovett, who came to UTB/TSC 12 years ago as a TSC lecturer, holds an associate of arts degree from Southwest Community College, a bachelor of science and a master of business administration from Northwest Missouri State University and a doctorate in education from the University of Houston.

Lovett said he loves teaching at UTB/TSC because of the opportunity to improve students' lives. "What we do here no doubt carries over into the lives of their families and into the community," he said. "I think we are engaged in something very important here."

In nominating Lovett, Betsy Boze, Dean of the School of Business, described him as a "rigorous but fair" master teacher.

"His students love him and he goes the extra mile for them," Boze said. "Students seek out any class he teaches and last semester a number of students even drove to Harlingen specifically to take his class."

Boze was referring to a marketing class Lovett taught in conjunction with Texas State Technical College.

Boze also praised Lovett for his work with high school students in breaking down the barriers to higher education. Long before the School of Business officially began recruiting in local high schools, Lovett had already established relationships with several area business teachers, visited their schools and invited their students to the UTB/TSC campus.

Lovett said he came to the Valley in the early 1980s fresh out of graduate school, planning on a career in business. Instead, his introduction to TSC as a lecturer became a commitment to the classroom that has not faded.

"When I was given that chance (to teach,) from then on I've always pursued the education field," Lovett said. "I just really enjoyed it and seemed to be able to get through to students fairly well."

Boze noted that Lovett was also selected by the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development as the 2000 recipient of its award for teaching excellence. In addition, Lovett was elected by his students as "Profesor de Mes" and featured in the campus newspaper.

"I can think of no faculty member more deserving of this award," Boze wrote in her nomination letter.
