Martinez Named Vice President for Business Affairs at
UTB/TSC
After
an extensive search that began last spring, Rosemary R. Martinez has been named
Vice President for Business Affairs at The University of Texas at Brownsville
and Texas Southmost College.
UTB/TSC President Dr.
Juliet V. García expressed her confidence in the University's newest vice
president. “Rosemary brings
valuable private and public sector experience to this work, coupled with an
energetic commitment to refining processes and improving efficiency. I look
forward to the university benefiting greatly from this appointment.”
Martinez joined the university in 1997 as Budget Director and Controller. Since
1999, she has also served as Interim Assistant Vice President for Business
Affairs.
“I am very excited and looking forward to the challenges that I will be
facing,” Martinez said. “I believe my years of experience have prepared me
well for this new position.”
Before joining UTB/TSC, Martinez accumulated a great deal of experience and
knowledge of the business community while holding a variety of positions in both
government and private sectors.
Martinez worked for Cameron County for 13 years beginning as Assistant County
Auditor and was eventually promoted to1st Assistant County Auditor.
In 1992, Martinez was appointed by the Cameron County Commissioner's
Court to serve as Budget Officer for the County and was also the Administrative
Assistant to then County Judge Tony Garza.
While at the county, Martinez is particularly proud of being a member of the
team that was instrumental in securing the bridge permit for Los Tomates
International Bridge.
In 1994, Mrs. Martinez moved to the private sector and assumed the duties of
Business Manager with TCI Tele-Communications, Inc.
Martinez has also been an active member of the community. She is a member of the
Brownsville Citizens Advisory Committee and a past board member of the United
Way of Southern Cameron County, the Boys and Girls Club of Brownsville, and the
Good Neighbor Settlement House. Martinez
has also lent her considerable talents to a number of community projects by
participating in the Feast of Sharing, United Way's “Day of Caring,” Boo at
the Zoo and relief efforts for Matamoros orphanages. In 1999, she was selected
as one of 30 “Women who make a Difference” and featured in a special
exhibition by local photographer, Greg Phelps.
In 1995, she was appointed by Governor George W. Bush to represent South Texas
for a three-year term on the Texas Commission for Volunteerism and Community
Service. She currently serves on
the Board of Directors for the Texas Foundation for Volunteerism and Community
Service.
Martinez earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting
from Pan American University, graduating summa cum laude in 1981.
She is a Certified Public Accountant and is currently pursuing a Master
of Arts degree at UTB/TSC with a primary focus in government and business.
