Author Carmen Tafolla Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month on Campus

Carmen TafollaInternational award-winning author and poet Dr. Carmen Tafolla will be on campus Monday, September 27 in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. She will give a presentation for undergraduate and high school students from 2:00-3:00 p.m., and will perform for the public from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Both events will take place in the Science, Engineering and Technology Building Lecture Hall. A book signing, with books available for purchase, will follow the evening performance. The evening events are free and open to the public.

Tafolla is the author of four books of poetry, one volume of non-fiction, seven screenplays and numerous short stories, articles and children's works. She says many of her works are dictated by ancestors "whispering over my shoulder." Her book, Sonnets to Human Beings received the First Prize in the Poetry Division of the UCI National Literary Competition. She has most recently been awarded the Art of Peace Award by the President's Peace Commission of St. Mary's University for "writing which contributes to peace, justice and human understanding."

Tafolla is best-known for her one-woman theatrical performance, which has been presented throughout the U.S. as well as in London, Madrid, Mexico City, Granada, Germany, Canada and Norway. In it, she portrays a viejita, a first-grader, a phachuquita, a young professional, a retired G.I., and a black woman janitor, among other voices of strength and beauty, voices of unique richness and the inherent giftedness of diversity.

"She's very good at capturing the voices of not only Hispanics, but people of other cultures," said Teresa Cadena, UTB/TSC Associate Professor of English and Speech. "I hope those who attend her performance will gain greater insights into the experiences that they are surrounded by, but may overlook. Dr. Tafolla is very witty, energetic and very honest. I think people will respond to that."

A native of the west-side barrios of San Antonio, Tafolla was told by her junior high principal that she had potential to "make it all the way to high school." She did, and followed it with a B.A. in 1972, an M.A. in 1973, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1981. In 1973, she became Director of the Mexican-American Studies Center at Texas Lutheran College, during which time she established the Mexican-American Services and Information Center to serve the community. She has held numerous faculty and administrative positions at universities throughout the Southwest, including Assistant Professor of Women's Studies at California State University Fresno and Special Assistant to the President for Cultural Diversity Programming at Northern Arizona University, but left higher education to pursue her writing full-time.
