National Author Ji-li Jiang to Visit UTB/TSC Campus

National Author Ji-li JiangJi-li Jiang, author of "The Monkey King" a serialized story currently appearing in The Brownsville Herald every Wednesday in Education Extra, and Red Scarf Girl, her memoir of the Chinese Cultural Revolution, will visit the UTB/TSC campus on Wednesday, March 28. The public is invited to her lecture.

Jiang will speak at 1:30 p.m. in the Lecture Hall of the Science and Engineering Technology Building.

Both "The Monkey King" and Red Scarf Girl introduces aspects of Chinese culture to American children.

Red Scarf Girl, Jiang’s first book fulfilled her long cherished wish to tell her story about what happened to her, her family, her neighborhood, and her school during the 1960’s Cultural Revolution in China.

The book won an ALA 1998 Best Book for Young Adults award, an ALA Notable Book award, a Parenting Magazine Magic Award for Most Wonderful Children’s Book in 1977 and was cited by Publishers Weekly 1977 as one of the Best Nonfiction Books for Children.

Besides writing, Jiang gives presentations around the country, talking about China, the Cultural Revolution, and her own experiences. She also devotes her time to various cultural exchange programs, organizing groups to study alternative medicine in China, bringing Chinese art troupes to perform in the states and sending students to summer camps in China to understand the Chinese culture.

The Brownsville Herald sponsors her visit to UTB/TSC.
